St. Mary’s Higher secondary School, located in the heart of Edoor has had remarkable achievements in the area of education. The institution has been playing a key role in imparting quality education for the last sixteen years. After high school, students from several Panchayaths in the Iritty area come here for doing their Plus Two course.
The school ranks second in Kannur district in the number of student enrollment. The school also boasts the highest number of students who get A+ every year. St. Mary’s has been maintaining this status for several years. Excellent discipline, the presence of brilliant students coming from a large geographical area, committed and very competent teachers, serene atmosphere, excellent playground, fully equipped science and computer laboratories, a reference library stocked with sufficient quantity of books, efficient management, supportive PTA, ease of transportation, and many other factors contribute to the development of this institution.
St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School came into being as a result of the determination, leadership and selfless effort of Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Kavalakkatt, who became the founder manager of the school. It must be mentioned that all the members of Edoor parish gave their unreserved support to the fulfillment of this noble endeavor. The school started out in 1998, with Sri. P V Philip, the then High School Headmaster, as the first Principal. Sri. Philip retired in 2000, and he was followed by Sri. P K George (2000-2001), Sri. C S Abraham (2001-2005), and Sri. O J Mathew (2005-2010). All were eminent leaders and great teachers who played their part in furthering the excellence of St. Mary’s. Sri. N D Sunny became Principal in 2011, and has been working in that capacity ever since.
Fr. Kuriakose Kavalakkatt was followed by Very Rev. Fr. Antony Purayidam (1999-2005). During the six long years in which he was the manager, more batched were added to the school, thereby increasing the number of students and the amount of facilities offered, making it not only the biggest but the best school in Thalassery Arch Diocese. He was followed by Very Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Poovathinkal (2005-2010). Following the footsteps of his predecessors he brought St. Mary’s to higher heights. During this period, the school won the award for the best school in Thalassery Arch Diocese, two times. Very Rev. Fr. Andrews Thekkel became the manager in May 2010. His efforts for the development of the school were praiseworthy. The school won the award for the best school in Thalassery Arch Diocese in 2011-2012.
