Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany was born on 03.12.1969 at Charal in the Archdiocese of Tellicherry as the fifth son among the seven children of Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Mary Pamplany. Mar Joseph had his lower primary school education at St. Sebastian’s School, Charal, high school education at St. Thomas High School, Kilianthara and Pre-degree education at Nirmalagiri College, Koothuparamba. He joined St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Tellicherry in 1988 and completed his priestly formation from St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary Alwaye.

On 30.12.1997 he was ordained priest by Mar George Valiamattam at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Church Tellicherry. He served the eparchy as assistant vicar at St. Joseph’s Forane Church, Peravoor and Vicar at St. Thomas Church, Deepagiri. He obtained M.A in Religious Studies from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium in 2001, Licentiate in 2002 and Ph.D in Sacred Scripture in 2006 from the same university. The title of his doctoral dissertation was “Crossing the Abysses: An Exegetical Study of John 20:24-29, in the Light of Johannine Notion of Discipleship.” He also holds P.G. Diploma in German, Hebrew and Greek languages.

Returning after his higher studies he was appointed as the Director of Bible Apostolate of the Archdiocese. He has initiated the establishment of Alpha Institute of Theology and Science, an institution for the theological formation of the religious and lay people. He became its founder director. He has been teaching Sacred Scripture in St. Joseph’s Pontifical Institute, Aluva, Good Shepherd Major Seminary, Kunnoth, St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, St. Mary’s Malankara Major Seminary, Trivandrum, Indian Institute of Spirituality, Bangalore and Divine Bible College, Muringoor. He is serving as research guide in various ecclesiastical Universities and Institutions. He was elected by the Holy Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church as the first auxiliary bishop of Tellicherry and his episcopal consecration was held on 08.11.2017. He was ordined by Mar George Njaralakatt with Mar George Valiamattam and Mar Joseph Kallarngattu as the co-consecrators, at st. Joseph’s Cathedral Thalassery. At the retirement of Archbishop George Njaralakkatt he was installed the Archbishop of Tellicherry on 20th April 2022.

Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany is a well-known writer and versatile orator. He has published more than 40 books, 50 research articles in national and international publications and more than 400 articles in regional Malayalam periodicals. He has membership in the editorial bodies of many academic publications. He has presented many research papers in international and national seminars. As a retreat preacher he has preached more than 1000 retreats to bishops, priests, religious and laity groups. He is a member of the Syro Malabar permanent Synod and the General Secretary of the Syro-Malabar Synod. He served the church as a priest in various capacities such as the secretary of CBCI Commission for Doctrine, the Secretary of CBCI Commission for Inter Ritual Text Books; Member of FABC Theology Commission; Member of Doctrinal Commission of KCBC and Syro-Malabar Synod and Member, text book committee of the Mystagogical Catechesis of the Syro-Malabar Synod. Currently he is the Chairman of Media Commission of both KCBC and Syro Malabar Church. He is the chairman of Synodal Commission of the Good Shepherd Major Seminary, Kunnoth. He is also the episcopal member of the CBCI Commission for Doctrine and the Syro-Malabar Commission for Education.

Archbishop Mar George Valiamattam Archbishop Mar George Valiamattam was born on 16th September 1938 at Punnathara in the Archdiocese of Changanassery as the eldest son of Thomas and Annamma Valiamattam. Later, his family migrated to Kodancherry in Calicut District. He had his school education at Nariveli and Punnathara. After his minor seminary formation in st. Mary’s Thop Minor seminary, Thrissur, he joined Carmelgiri seminary, Aluva for Philosophical studies. His theological studies were done at the Urban University, Rome. He was ordained priest by Mar Sebastian Valloppilly on 30th November 1963 in Rome. After his ordination he obtained his doctoral degree in theology from the Gregorian University, Rome in 1967.
 
He served the diocese as assistant vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Kodancherry, Vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Thalanji, and Secretary to the Bishop, Chancellor of the diocese, Diocesan Director of Catechism and Mission League and as Rector of the Minor Seminary. He served in the diocese of Thamarassery in the capacity of chancellor, secretary and Director of Catechism. When nominated the second Bishop of Tellicherry, he was the Forane Vicar at St. Thomas Forane Church, Shirady.
 
He was consecrated Bishop at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Tellicherry by His Eminence Antony Cardinal Padiyara, assisted by Mar Joseph Powathil, Archbishop of Changanassery and Mar Sebastian Valloppilly, on May 1st, 1989 and assumed office on the same day.
 
When the diocese of Tellicherry was raised to the status of Metropolitan Archdiocese, he was promoted and appointed as its first Metropolitan Archbishop on 18th May, 1995. He was enthroned as the Archbishop on July 24th 1995, at a solemn ceremony in St. Joseph’s Cathedral presided over by the Major Archbishop His Eminence Antony Cardinal Padiyara.
 
He served the Church in India as the Vice President of CBCI and its Standing Committee member. He was a member of the Permanent Synod of the Syro Malabar Church. He was the Episcopal advisor of INFAM since its inception in 2013 and is the Chairman of the synodal Commission for the Good Shepherd Major Seminary, Kunnoth. Mar Sebastian Valloppilly,

Mar Sebastian Valloppilly, born on 4th August, 1911, at Kodakkachira in the diocese of Palai had his secular studies at S.B. College, Changanassery and St. Xavier’s College Palayamkottah and Ecclesiastical studies at Papal Seminary, Kandy. He was ordained priest on 24th August 1945 and nominated Apostolic Administrator of Tellicherry on 31st December 1953. He took charge of the diocese on 19th March 1954. He was elected the first bishop of Tellicherry on 16th October 1955 and consecrated on 8th January 1956 at St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome by His Eminence Eugene Cardinal Tissarant. The diocese enjoyed his fruitful leadership for 33 years.


 


He sent his resignation letter to the Holy See on 4th August 1986 when he completed his 75 years of age, and his resignation was accepted on 18th February 1989 when Mar George Valiamattam was appointed his successor.


 


He was well known for his Gandhian way of life and commitment to temperance movement. Many secular awards were presented to him in recognition of his valuable services to the community in particular and society at large. His autobiography, ‘Daivam Nammodukoode’ (God Is With Us) portraits the true picture of Malabar migration of the middle of the 20th century. After his retirement he lived in the Archbishop’s house giving inspiration and consolation to thousands of his spiritual children. On 4th April 2006 he departed for his eternal reward.
